Beaded jewelry has fascinated man since the days of cave men. According to National Geographic, the oldest known beads are 70,000 years old. Anthropologists and archaeologists agree that the emergence of beaded jewelry is an indicator of symbolic thinking.
Beaded jewelry didn't help man create fire. Beads didn't add to man's ability to hunt for and capture food. They didn't provide shelter, so why would beads be of value to humans 70,000 years ago? The answer is "man attached importance to gemstone beads because of their beauty."

With a limited ability to carry things, man chose to carry, and wear precious stone beads. With no pockets, he had to tie them to strips of leather or other strings. The art of handcrafted beaded jewelry was born. Over time, beaded jewelry became a symbol of prestige, a symbol of power and wealth.

When it comes to the history of beaded jewelry, the Pixies tell the story this way:
A long time ago Kki, a cave man, was walking toward the river. There had been no rain for weeks and Kki was thirsty. He knew the most likely place to find water was the river. When he reached the bank, he noticed the water was lower then yesterday. It had uncovered part of the river bottom.

He knelt down and bent to suck water from a pool. As he did, the sun struck his eyes from beneath the water! He rose up and looked at the place the sun had come from. He saw a stone. This was no ordinary stone! It was bright and shiny. Kki picked it up and turned it in his hand. The light of the sun was dancing in his hand! Man's fascination with gemstone beads and jewelry had begun!
